Hinted movie problems with DSS

Hello,

I've been having problems with non-self-contained hinted movies and wondered if anyone else has had the same problems.
I'm running Darwin Streaming Server 4.1.3 on WinNT for the server machine and QuickTime Pro 6 on WinNT for the clients.
I am trying to stream RTP packets containing G.711 payloads. To do this I have created a .wav file with the encoding I need with the aim of streaming as a hinted file.
I have followed the "Streaming File Formats like .avi, .text and .wav" section in the QTSS admin guide without any sucess.
I find that the examples .mov and .mp4 files stream correctly, as do hinted versions of original .mov files however when I try to stream hinted .wav files or hinted .avi files the client QT6 application seems to go into a waiting state whilst "requesting data" until it returns "-5408: Time out".
I have found that if I make the hinted movie self-contained it stream correctly however the RTP header payload type is set to dynamic instead of the type I require.
I have made sure the DSS media directory is set to the correct location. Both .wav and hinted .mov files are located within this directory.
I have noticed postings relating to similar problems with mpeg1 hinted streaming in the archive. Is this effectively the same problem? and if so is there a simple solution.

Any help much appreciated.
