Re: Optimize hints for server options

Can you tell me more about what is this "Optimize hints for server" option
good for ? How does it work ?

"Optimize hints for server" duplicates the media in the hinted track. This doubles the file size of the movie on the server (without increasing the data rate, though). Since a copy of media is included in the hint track the server has less work to do when sending the media out.

QT documentation says you should use it when you are expecting many visitors
of your streamed content in one time.
I am expecting this situation in my case.

AFAIK this setting is not as important anymore as the later versions of the QTSS/DSS is more efficient than before. I think it was before version 2.0 when Apple really suggested using the "Optimize hints..."

I think the main thing to consider is the size of the media. If you have a 1GB file, when you hint it with "optimized for server", the file size will balloon to 2GB.

2. Sorenson Video 3 Pro codecs interface has its own options for streaming settings like - "slice picture into packets" and "force block refresh".

Should I use those setings for hinting tracks for my QTSS or is it better to
use hinting setting from QT player Pro ?

Can or should I combine those settings somehow ?

From what I understand you should use both, meaning, have the settings in the SV3 options window match those of the hinting window in the Player (or elsewhere). This applies to the "Slice picture into packets of XXX bytes" (in the Options window for the SV3 codec), and the "Packet size limit" in the QT Player exporter.

The "Force block refresh ever xxxx seconds" is specific to the SV3 codec so should have no impact on how the server streams the media. Rather it's an interval at which the video would refresh even if no key frame is played in such interval.
