Although Apple has made significant steps to to gain market share by making
some of their technologies available for other operating sytstems (i.e. The
QT Player and Darwin Server), I was dissapointed to recently discover that
their QuickTime Broadcaster (the third of the main three QT elements) is
proprietary to Apple OS-X only.
I was looking for a live broadcasting mechanism for my personal web site,
and since I am using QT as my video delivery method of choice (QT Player,
and the Darwin server), I was hoping to stick with Apple for the live
broadcast element as well.
Sadly I was told by Apple to look to Sorenson for their Broadcast program.
Unfortunately it has been discontinued as of last month.
I was forced to go with a Windows Media 6 based solution, courtesy of PYSoft
and their Broadcaster utility (which is very good I might add).
At the end of the day, I was forced to abandon my 100% QuickTime effort on
my web site due to the QT Broadcaster not being available for my OS.
I thought that was a drag....market share should be the main concern for the
folks at Apple in general....QT is still #3 behind Windows and
RealMedia...this isn't helping...
