read you correctly, also entails streaming and testing the reception of the same stream all locally.

People have had similar trouble locally with routers other than Linksys too, the problem is if you need to do anything other than plain telnet/ssh/ftp/http
then you may need to get into your router to configure it. And some manfrs have made this a non-trivial task :-(
