Welcome to QuickTime 6.4, featuring 3GPP, the worldwide standard for
the creation, delivery, and playback of multimedia over new,
high-speed wireless networks. Built on MPEG-4 and powered by
QuickTime, 3GPP extends the reach of rich multimedia to a new
generation of handheld wireless devices. As the first widely
distributed, freely available multimedia technology to deliver 3GPP
capabilities, QuickTime enables users all over the world to share
3GPP content with others via both computers and mobile devices.
When first released over ten years ago, QuickTime revolutionized the
industry. Today, with hundreds of millions of copies of QuickTime
distributed to both Mac and PC users, the revolution continues. And
with the introduction of 3GPP, QuickTime again redefines the future
of digital media.
What's New in QuickTime 6.4?
3GPP Support
QuickTime 6.4 now integrates extensive support for 3GPP, including
video, audio, text, and native .3gp file format support. Because 3GPP
is now a part of the core architecture of QuickTime, you can import,
export, and play back .3gp files just as you do .mp4 and .mov files.
The technologies in QuickTime 6.4 that provide these capabilities are
enhanced MPEG-4 and H.263 video codecs, a newly enhanced AAC
(Advanced Audio Coding) audio codec, an AMR (Adaptive Multi-Rate)
audio codec, a 3G Text importer and exporter, and a user-friendly
3GPP export dialog to aid in the creation of 3GPP-compliant files.
This support is now available as part of QuickTime 6.4. Learn more
about 3GPP.
Performance Improvements
QuickTime 6.4 delivers a host of performance enhancements. For Mac OS
X users, you'll find DV encoding and decoding improvements, providing
greater efficiency throughout the DV workflow for users of Final Cut
Pro, iMovie and other QuickTime-based applications. QuickTime 6.4
also provides improved playback of both SD and HD streams. Windows
users will find overall application performance enhancements.
Pixlet
Pixlet is the first studio-grade codec for filmmakers. Tuned for use
with high-definition source, it allows digital film frames to play
back in real time on any 1Ghz G4. For Mac OS X v.10.3 only. Learn
more.
Support for Java 1.4.1
Developers can now create media-rich applications by accessing the
QuickTime APIs with Java 1.4.1. Learn more.

And Much More
QuickTime 6.4 also delivers authentication support for access of
streams behind proxy servers (Mac OS X only), improved MIME type
handling, improved automatic detection of streaming transport (Mac OS
X only), playback of .amr and .sdv files, support for Macromedia
Flash 5, DVC Pro PAL, JPEG 2000 for Mac OS X, Applescript (Mac only),
more than 100 other media types such as DV, MP3, and JPEG, and a host
of developer APIs.
