Movies/Mp3s do not show in playlist editor

Sorry if this one comes up all the time, but I cannot get any media to show in the playlist selection list on Mac OSX 10.3.7 Darwin SS. I have changed the path numerous times and attempted a couple of permission changes. Am I missing something here? Alternatively, what permissions should be assigned to the media folders? I can't even see subfolders.
