Re: 24 7 video server

Peter,

I suggest you contact Dave Schroeder at University of Wisconsis, Madison (U.S.). He has setup a system using QTSS and Xserve that handles all the cable TV stations, and it's quite a success story. Your challenge honestly sounds a lot simpler, so I'm confident QTSS will do the trick.

You'll definitely want to use the new QuickTime 7.0 and Tiger Server, due out within a month or two, because (as Apple has publicly stated), they support a new more efficient encoding called H.264 that enabled true full res broadcast quality results at around 500kbps.

Note that although your source is 720x576, you'll want to scale your output to 640x480 (or perhaps 720x540), because those are 4:3 aspect ratios. Remember, computers generally use square pixels, but broadcast standards such as PAL and NTSC use non-square (rectangul-shaped) pixels. --nate

Gooday all.

I have been asked to set up a video server for the local community tv station.

It is supposed to run 24/ 7.  It needs to be able to handle everything from 30 second ads to 90 minute programmes.

I hope to be able to load up to a weeks program on an on air server with a second backup being loaded for the next week.

Does anyone use QT server for this task?  Can it do broadcast quality (and reliability) server work?

The format is 720x576 Pal DV with the output being encoded for transmission.  I would also like a parallel stream to the web at say 300 kb/sec.

Any ideas or success stories?

Peter
