The VideoLAN team is happy to announce the final version of VLC 0.8.4.
(Note: 0.8.3 was skipped because its technical improvements were too
little)
Highlights from improvements include:
<snip>
* enhanced H.264 support
<snip>
Binary packages are available for Windows and Mac OS X. Other packages
will follow shortly. You can download those and the source code as well

Apple and much of the streaming industry is, I think, moving in the
direction of
H.264 for video streaming.
However, there is a noticable lack of players other than Quicktime.
Here is what
I have found in some testing with Mac OS 10.4
Real - will not play DSS streamed H.264 video - says that the
needed video/H264 plug-in is missing
- will play the audio, though
VLC - will play H.264 files from QT just fine, but will not play
the streams without extra software
from Live.com (which is a killer as far as anything mass market is
involved).
So, I have yet to find an alternative to QT for the Mac, and I
have found no H.264 streaming
support on Linux.
Does anyone else know about H.264 streaming support for Linux ?
Something that would work
out of the box ?
