RE: File formats?

Matthew,

It seems odd though that Real's Helix server can play both QT and WMV files.  Evidently WMV is not all that closed.

WM is proprietary is well, but Real gives a percentage of the money that their customers pay them so that RealServer can support WM.

ALSO, Real has Open Source version of it's player and its server, so it seems that they are putting their format out there to some degree in an open fashion.

Well, they were pretty much forced to. There’s no evidence that it’s helping stave off the death of their format, though — even Real’s paid content services use WM.

All new deployments I’m familiar with are using Flash (proprietary), Windows Media (proprietary) or MPEG-4 (standards-based), none of which are supported by the open-source versions of Real’s stuff.

Hope this is helpful,

— Charles

Major bummer!

It's a shame, too, because I would guess there are many out there like me that have a ton of files to move over, and allowing us to play them on the QTSS platform would be a great way to get more market share.

Thanks anyway.
