Re: QuickTime Broadcaster data rate

Colin:

Did you have the frame reordering box checked or unchecked? I highly recommend disabling frame reordering for live streams.

This past weekend we streamed our Homecoming Parade on the Internet, not
using QTSS directly but through our Akamai contract. We used QuickTime
Broadcaster (as well as Helix Producer) to produce a live stream in .mov and
.rm format.

This was our first live event since we got our new MacBook Pro, so we
decided to stream using the H.264 video codec and AAC audio. Our target
bitrate was around 350kbps, and I setup the QTB settings to use a data rate
of 64kbps audio (mono) and to limit the video data to 250kbps. We used a
frame size of 320x240 and streamed at 15 fps.

What happened during the event was the encoder was all over the map with
regard to video data rate. It would sometimes go as high as 230kbps, and the
stream would look very good. Then for long periods it would drop down in the
50-80kbps range, and things would look pretty bad. CPU load never went above
about 45% (each core), and the frame rate was pretty consistent around 14-15
fps. It seems as though the data limit in QTB doesn't really function as a
"target data rate" as much as a true limit.

Anybody have insights into how we could truly achieve a target data rate in
the 250kbps range? It really looked quite good when we got those peaks,
compared to the Real stream.
