Re: Flash Streaming

But if something is an institutional service that is geared toward members of that institution, a managed environment is actually a benefit, as whatever is needed to use the service (say, QuickTime) can be similarly easily deployed...

Unless -- as the last poster suggested -- the service is irrationally proscribed. :-)

I would suggest that the issue that many machines live in 'managed' environments... corporate or educational institutions, where for reasons better known only to themselves, managers choose not to install QuickTime on the master builds, so the users don't have it available to them, and one-off local installs aren't catered for?

One question to answer this is "how much of a barrier is it to have the user install Quicktime?"

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html

One option is to offer both for the time being and record the % of how many people opt to change to Quicktime vs. how many still stream in Flash.

You can always position it as "For premium streaming quality, install Quicktime from the link below:".

Note careful application of lovely marketing terms "premium" and "quality" to invoke desire in the viewer.

In some cases, it is a barrier but with iTunes becoming as ubiquitous as the flash player, it becomes less of an issue.

We to are considering a move to Flash from QT. One of the perceived
benefits is Flash player plug-in penetration is now at around 97%.
Compared to Windows Media Player plug-in at 59%, Real-Player plug- in at
56% and QuickTime player plug-in at 41%. I would hope this results in a
wider viewing audience, which is our primary goal for streaming our content.

A drawback may be lower quality vs our h.264 encoded video, though I
would like to perform some side-by-side tests before making that
judgment. So if a larger viewing audience comes at to high a cost in
quality, we'll stick with DSS and QT.

I guess the question I'd ask is: why would you want to move to
Flash?
What are the perceived benefits of Flash for you? What are the
drawbacks (as you see it) of using QTSS?
