NSArchiver and Paths

I am trying to save an NSMutableArray using NSArchiver and the method... [NSArchiver archiveRootObject:theObject toFile:@"~/Library/TheDir/TheFile.extension"];

However it is not working. It seems like it is a problem with the path that I am giving it. Is it valid to specify the users home directory as ~ in this method or does it have to be an absolute pathname or is there something else that I am doing wrong?
