It really depends on the type of game development you want to do.

If you want web based "tetris" style games, then look at java or flash. Java 
would be your better bet if you wanted a more complex game that is web based 
(as far as I know it is more like a standard programming language).

If you wanted to do a game that uses the Mac OS X look and feel, with heaps of 
dialogs, and other UI elements, then cocoa is your best bet.

If you want to make OpenGL type games, then C is your friend. C++ if you 
prefer a Object Oriented system. That said, there are OpenGL wrappers for 
many other languages out there, so you could use python or others to get the 
same thing done, though it might not have the same performance as writing it 
in C/C++.

In the end, it helps to know the types of games you want to make, and the 
languages you are familiar with. You could write a text based adventure game 
with a expert system language like clips if you really wanted to.
