Re: How to correctly start a JAVA application

Hi Thomas,

I fully agree with John on this. When learning a new programming language one should stick to the basics. That is, using a good text editor (something with syntax highlighting but not much else) and compiling from the terminal. Assuming you are at least somewhat familiar with working from the terminal, doing so will allow you focus on the language itself and avoid cluttering your learning experience with extraneous details.

If you are not comfortable using the command-line, you may want to check out BlueJ; BlueJ is an education-oriented IDE specifically designed for introducing Java to new programmers. It is free, and available at http://www.bluej.org.

Xcode is just a little much for your intro Java class (It's "Java,"
not "JAVA"). I'd recommend simply using a text editor like
Subethaedit and then compile from the terminal. Compiling a single
Java source file is easy. Just type "javac youfile.java" and then run
it with "java yourclassname"

In class I'm taking a JAVA programming class, however, of coarse I
never programmed in JAVA before and I can't seem to figure out how to
start a project with xcode. My text book and prof. say that JAVA
applications are extension java, then once compiled they're extension
class. Now All I see in xcode is extension JAR files. I have no clue
what those are, but they're not what I'm looking for. Does anyone
code JAVA applications, that I can tell me how to create a project
from xcode properly? Unless I have to download a xcode plugin, I'm
just not sure what to do.
Thanks for all help,
Tom
