Re: It's not that easy

Finlay Dobbie wasn't referring to a 386 MHz Processor when saying "386 processor", I think. 386 processors is a term like Pentium Processors from Intel. After the 386 processors Intel launched the 486 processor and then the pentium. Each class of processors had a higher range of Hertz. The 32-Bit processors are called x86- Processors and the 32-bit architecture is called iA-32 or like you said i386-architecture.
So when Apple will introduce a 64-bit Macintosh with a Intel Processor you cant say i386. Intel has adopted the 64-bit standard from AMD, who is called EM64T. The best is, I think, to say Intel- based Macintosh, like that you dont have to worry about standards and things like that!
Perhaps Apple will invent a new name like PowerBook for the Intel- based Macintosh's! For Example IntellyBook or something like that;-)

Cheers!

I don't quite know all the terminology ins & outs. I was under the impression the intel architecture was called "i386" but I might just be out of my mind. I wasn't quite referring to a 386 mhz processor! (grin)

I'm just waiting to see the first Mac with a four inch "Intel Inside" sticker plastered across the front...
(When they start bundling AOL I'm jumping ship...)

"Intel Based Mac" or "386 Mac" would be just fine if a distinction is
needed, but remember that eventually All Macs will be intel based

I would be worried if we start seeing Macs with 386 processors ;-)
Currently, we don't know what the branding of any release hardware
will be, and "Macintosh with Intel processor" (as used by the UBPG) is
a bit verbose.
