Manually Creating nib files

I need to be able to manually creating nib files without the use of Interface Builder (this is necessary for a research project).

So far I know that a nib has 3 files, classes.nib, info.nib, and keyedobjects.nib.

The first two files are easy to create. I am looking at keyedobjects.nib. It appears to have been created with NSKeyedArchiver, and the method archivedDataWithRootObject. Does anyone have any ideas what the root object in a nib might be?
