iTunes Categories Localization & Additions

I develop an application called Feeder which creates RSS feeds and the latest version will also work with the new iTunes tags.

I am wondering how the iTunes deals with localized category names. My guess is that the XML should always use the English form, even if these are presented in iTunes in another language (e.g. in the French iTMS). Could this be confirmed, please?

Additionally, the original iTunes podcasting specification dated 2005-06-28 listed the valid iTunes categories that could be used, since this list is not included in the 2005-07-07 specification I have been referring to the categories seen when using the "Browse Music" feature of the music store. These match the original specification but there now appears to be an additional category, Transportation, with three subcategories: Automotive, Aviation, and Commuting. Please could someone confirm this additional category will be considered valid when submitting feeds to iTunes. Obviously, it would be best if the whole list of categories and subcategories is included in the next specification.

Like others on the list, I'm also interested in getting answers on Mark Pilgrim's questions about whether the <itunes:image> tag should be applied to both the channel and items (it only seems to be used in iTunes at channel level) and how iTunes falls back to core elements if it cannot find <itunes:*> elements. Feeder can show an iTunes preview of a podcaster's feed and so I've tried to guess these rules by checking podcasts in the iTMS against their feeds.

Thank you,

-Steve Harris
