I heard from a clueful Apple/iTunes guy in a position to know. Since
real-world experience doesn't support that, though, I think there's
more to the story.
Maybe the answer is that you have to use Apple's RSS extensions. This test:

...used the generic Atom link-rel feature without the Apple extensions.
