| I've been thinking about ways to optimize the delivery of RSS/Atom content, by avoiding polling whenever possible. There's a very obscure bit of the RSS 2.0 spec dealing with a <cloud> element that enables a push-based notification mechanism. There is a brief description here: and Mark Pilgrim has some commentary on the <cloud> tag itself: but I was unable to find a full spec, nor any evidence that this element/protocol is being used. (The description says that "UserLand is operating a cloud that conforms to this spec at radio.xmlstoragesystem.com. The workstation side is implemented in Radio UserLand." That server appears to be running, at least it returns a response of sorts to a GET /, but I couldn't find a feed hosted at userland.com containing a <cloud> element.) Does anyone know of current RSS 2.0 feeds that contain this element? Or of servers or newsreaders that support clouds, other than those mentioned above? (I do think this is a pretty good idea, although the existing design is both vague and incomplete. I'm brainstorming some ideas for improvements. If anyone else is interested, I'd be glad to have a discussion, either here or in some other forum.) ___________________________________________ Jens Alfke — Social Software Introvert — Apple Computer Getting bored is not allowed |
