I'd love to know about the issues with scaling, since the reason I'm interested in this is to try to make things scale better than they currently do with polling. In principle that should be possible. A back-of-envelope sketch: in the current scheme a server hosting a feed gets N*F hits per day, where N=number of readers and F=frequency at which subscribers poll (typically every 30 minutes?) In a notification-based system, ideally, that goes to N*P pings to send, plus N*P hits in response, where P=frequency at which articles are posted. If P < R/2 this is an improvement. Even better, the scheme I'm thinking of allows many clients to share an aggregator server (much as they would share a mail server), which would greatly lower N. Of course, there are always inconvenient details that don't show up at back-of-envelope scale. So real-world experiences would be valuable to know. ___________________________________________ Jens Alfke — Social Software Introvert — Apple Computer Getting bored is not allowed |
