Re: feed: URI assumed by Safari

I did not "make up a new approach". I used an existing public spec that has been supported since 2003 by several news-reader apps on multiple platforms, including our own.

I'm not sure what software you think is being "broken". This thread started out as a report of Safari RSS having trouble with one website's feeds, due to a simple bug in our code unrelated to the use of the 'feed:' protocol.

(On the contrary, as Brent pointed out, using the 'feed:' protocol meant we supported the existing news-readers on the Mac, since switching the default binding for that protocol allows the user to select a default news-reader.)

What would you and your teammates
think of having Apple join other vendors of client software on the
protocol for one-click subscription?

Off-line, Lucas clarified that the spec he means is <http://pswg.jot.com/WikiHome/OneClickSpec2>, which is derived from (and seems identical to) <http://www.kbcafe.com/rss/usm.html>. I hadn't heard of either of these before. (The earliest date on those specs in January 2005, which is about when Safari RSS went feature-complete, and six months after our developer release.)

I don't really have a religious devotion to one system over the other, to be honest. This whole domain is such a creaking pile of kludges that I have a hard time taking seriously arguments about one alternative being fundamentally more 'harmful' than another.
