My guess is that they're using a rich combination of the MRSS
extensions for their own service (with some private mime type), but
still intend to provide something er, unextended for other tools. But
the fact that you didn't end up with something more vanilla through
your choices suggests there may be a bug around somewhere.

Probably. MRSS does bring quite a lot to the podcast table, is fairly
well documented, and should be reasonably bug-free due to its
relatively open dev process.
