RE: Best imaging practices?

We typically dont boot into TDM mode. If you boot the system and let it run, then hook up the firewire drive to the PB and run NetRestore helper. Helper takes care of a lot of things for you in making the image.

We have a G5 image, iBook (latest iBooks) and G4 Desktop tower image, all created in this manner (only we use Disk Utility to make the image).

Hi,

Just some follow-up on our imaging woes. Tonight I took my 10.4.2
Powerbook in target disk mode and connected it to my 10.4.2 G5, then
did these steps as recommended in part by AFP's article (http://
www.afp548.com/article.php?story=20040726230142403&query=imaging).

1. Used the 10.4 CD to install a fresh copy of the OS on a
Powerbook. Once it was installed and I setup an admin user and
logged in once, I rebooted the machine into Target Disk Mode.

2. I plugged the Powerbook via firewire into my G5 tower running
10.4.2.

3. I did a Get Info on my Powerbook's mounted image on the G5 and
made sure to UNcheck "Ignore permissions on this volume."

4. Fired up Disk Utility and repaired the permissions on the Powerbook.

5. Clicked File-->New-->Disk Image From Folder and chose the
Macintosh HD.

6. Gave it a name, and for options I selected "Image format:
compressed" and "Encryption: none."

7. The image process got about 98% done and then opened up this
dialogue box: "Unable to create "Macintosh HD" - error 49168"

To give it the ol' college try, I made a similar setup but used
Netrestore this time. So from step 4 above, I then:

1. Got a fresh copy of Netrestore from Bombich's site.

2. Opened Netrestore Helper, chose the Powerbook to make an image
of, selected "Read-only compressed" and checked the "Skip file-level
restore checksumming" and started the imaging process.

3. About halfway through I had to leave the room for 5 minutes, and
when I came back the process had failed with an error. When I viewed
the log it said:

-----
hdiutil: create failed - error 49168
-----

It's a sad day when I Google "error 49168" and get NO results :-(

Anxious for any help/tips/etc.

Thanks,
Brian
