Let also call attention to fink. It is a well-documented OS X version
of the debian packaging system, it has over 820 packages ported,
and it has almost all major X11 programs (X11R6 itself, many
window managers, most of gnome), all of teTeX, compilers/interpreters for
fortran, dylan, ml, haskell, smalltalk, java, common lisp, scheme,
much of GNU, python with a nice set of python tools, quite
a few perl packages, scientific environments such as R, octave,
gnuplot, yorick, scilab, many plotting programs, browsers such
as mozilla, amaya, dillo, lynx, links. If you have the Dec 2001
Dev tools installed, installing from source is a breeze, and if
you don't have them, you can in almost all cases download
the binary versions of the packages.
