What is "canonically decomposed"? Normalization Form C?

No, I meant what I said. "Canonical decomposition" is normalization form D. See http://developer.apple.com/techpubs/macosx/Essentials/SystemOverview/FileSystem/
File_Encodings_and_Fonts.html for more details.

From Cocoa, however, it is really better to use the NSFileManager and NSString methods I mentioned, because they are specifically defined to produce a representation appropriate for the filesystem, whatever that might be.

Similarly, when using CF it is better to use the CFURL functions that are specifically defined to produce representations appropriate for the filesystem.
