_LARGEFILE_SOURCE and _FILE_OFFSET_BITS definitions smell of Solaris 2.7 and higher (might have been there at 2.6, but I do not think so; long time ago).

They are intended to pull in the syscalls needed to support files larger than 2GB. IIRC, there is no need for this in any 4.4BSD based OS, including Mac OS X.

However, there is a possibility that other Sunisms are present in the code.
