I thought this was due to your environment being different from mine,
but I just downloaded the tar archive myself and surprisingly it
builds successfully. As it stands, there seems to be something wrong
with the CVS tree. I will have to find out what the difference is but
at least I have something to test now and if stable, build a new
install package based on 1.02-tar.

So, thanks a lot for trying out the obvious. I would have wasted
another three weeks trying various CVS versions ;-)
