pthread_mutex_lock returns err code 2

The System call named pthread_mutex_lock((& mutex.mut)) returns err code 2 
on MAC - OS X / 10.3.3 gcc 3.3.
I am not able to understand reason behind this.
Do anybody have explaination for this.
Is there any work around for this problem.
