Using ksh or zsh instead of bash makes it behave differently, too (still not quite right AFAICT). Using ash makes it work correctly, so I would also think that it is a bug in bash. Only it is a bug that doesn't live in the /bin/bash binary, because if I take /bin/bash from Panther and run it on Tiger, I get exactly the same error.
