Get Serial number from C

Dear list,

I have a Linux program using the disk id (using hdreg.h HDIO_GET_IDENTITY) but I can't seem to find the equivalent on Tiger. Is there a way to get a unique id coming from the Hardware (even may be the serial number of the Machine itself)

Using sysctl does not seem to give any unique machine related id
