Re: autotools

I see what you're saying. Hmmm. It's probably worth exploring what's in the Dev Tools and what's in the base OS. The lines are fairly blurry right now, and there are quite a few "developer tools" which are shipped in the BSD package. Getting them moved to the devtools package would give us a lot more flexibility to update them more frequently and also categorize them more accurately.

I'm cc'ing someone who might want to look into this. Your point is a good one. I'm not saying anything will necessarily come of it, but it's still a good point. :)

Ah,

I was hoping that they would be included in the updates for the developer tools not the OS itself. Since Apple is just bundling the tools instead of developing them-even more so.

The default install in Tiger that I have for automake (for example) is 1.6.3 which was released in mid-2002. There have been steady updates in the autotoolchain (save autoconf) since then. Current stable release is 1.9something. Since there have been OS releases since 2002, I don't think it has been updated.

Thanks for the reply,
Mike

Hello,
Is there any news on when Apple will be updating the included autotools to a more recent version?

One obvious and fairly safe answer is "in the next release", but it's not clear to me that this is what you're asking. Software Updates are generally only done to fix critical problems or address potential/actual security issues. I don't think there's anything in the auto* tools which qualify them for software update.

Is there any reason why the autotool updates are coming so slow?

I do believe we've updated them with almost every major release of the OS. See above as to why we don't update them in SUs.
