Hello list, im depressed :-(
Currently there is no viable low cost Narrow SCSI solution based on PCI
or PCI-X for PowerMac G5's (not even 1 PCI 2.1 slot on a G5)
However, there are several 'USB to SCSI' adapters which upon first
examination would appear to be a solution for those
of us in the desperate situation with a G5 an no PCI rev2.1 slots to
accommodate our 5 volt SCSI cards.
Looking into the details, none of these devices support daisy chaining
on the Mac OS X platform. On the Mac all of these devices ONLY have a
'USB mass storage mode' driver which allows only 1 device.
These products are also supported on Windows. Interestingly, the
products shipping for Windows also include a 'SCSI emulation mode'
driver. The adapters connected to a Windows PC with this 'SCSI
emulation mode' driver supports SCSI device daisy chaining.
Im told IOUSBDeviceInterface class driver doesn't support devices
beside IOUSBMassStorage. if the device is not a mass storage device
type, it is not recognized by the system. Hence it is a Mac OS X
limitation that is blocking these devices from validating daisy chained
devices acting in a SCSI emulation mode since there is no other class
driver.
The Engineers at Ratoc Systems have tried to get multiple SCSI devices
working on their USB to SCSI adapter without any success.
Im wondering if there is a solution to this problem the Ratoc engineers
may not be aware of? Im trying every source i can to find a solution
here.
Perhaps Apple could pitch in and offer some idea's on how to get a
driver functioning in 'SCSI Emulation Mode' for these adapters to
finalyl allow us to
use more than one SCSI device connected to the adapter?
Perhaps Tiger will provide support for such a situation?
Best regards
