[newbie] starting with hardware development

Hey all!

For a while now i have some ideas for USB hardware that i wish to try out. Obviously, i need some equipment for this.

I have been programming some PICs on my uni, and would like to be able to do this on my mac.

I have been told that AVR-chips are nowadays the way to go, so what i basically need is a USB-device that lets me program AVR chips, and some suggestions on how to get started (i've been looking around, but i find it very hard to find any leads)

i have been told that

Would be a good device to get going, in combination with a USB->Serial adapter, can anyone confirm this?

Once more, i'm a total newbie, so any advice is welcome.

Thanks in advance,

Robert Kuilman
