That might do it, but if I can avoid it, I'd like to.

Here's the reference to the list archives showing how to set up this codeless KEXT. It's actually pretty trivial. Once this KEXT matches and starts for your device, it'll beat out the USB HID driver and you'll be able to use the IOUSBLib APIs on your device.
