Does the HP printer have a HID interface that their software might be grabbing (some newer print/scan devices have extra buttons implemented as HID devices)? If so, maybe their software is inadvertently grabbing your device

HP's devices do have HID interfaces (for "scan", "fax", etc. buttons) and theire software is notoriously badly written, so this is a valid place to be looking.


(I have an HP OfficeJet 6110 and, while the hardware is very nice, the software is absolutely awful -- I now keep it installed on a scratch partition and reboot when I actually need to use it)
