Also your questions seem to be about kernel drivers ("kexts"), if at all possible you should be thinking of userland drivers, which aren't drivers at all, but just a normal user process accessing the device. These are so much easier to work with than kexts, so unless you have a very good reason for needing a kext you should stick to userland.

A very good reason for a kext is usually that the device provides a service to the kernel, the kernel has most of those covered already. What sort of device do you have?
