What are these USB errors trying to tell me?

Title: What are these USB errors trying to tell me?
I apologize if this is message is inappropriate to the list as it is not really a development question.  However in searching the archives I see related threads.

I’ve had a rock stable set-up with a Power Mac G4 (Quicksilver) and 17” Studio Display for many years.  Over the past several weeks I’ve had intermittent failures of the USB hub in the Studio Display.  I’ve been frantically trying to diagnose the problem as either hardware or software, but can’t seem to get to the bottom of it.

Here’s the summary:
-Failures always occur at start-up and usually after long periods of system inactivity (CPU off, not asleep)
-When failure occurs, the entire USB bus for the monitor is missing from the hardware system profile.  No amount of plugging or unplugging revives the ports.
-When failure occurs the touch sensitive monitor preference button also becomes non-operational
-Restarts usually revive the ports, but often only after the attached devices (to the monitor ports) are removed.  Attached devices include a logitech mouse or an Apple keyboard

The failures correlate 100% with the presence of one of a handful of USB errors.  I could use some help interpreting these errors.  These are the types of errors I get on start-up when the ports fail:

   IOUSBHubDevice[0x1f5a100]: Error (0xe00002ed) getting device config descriptor
Jan 14 19:46:58 localhost kernel: USBF:    27.289    IOUSBHubDevice[0x1f5a100]::GetFullConfigurationDescriptor - Error (e00002ed) getting first 4 bytes of config descriptor
Jan 14 19:46:58 localhost kernel: USBF:    27.289    AppleUSBHub[0x21d7c00]::ConfigureHub No config descriptor
Jan 14 19:46:58 localhost kernel: USBF:    27.289    AppleUSBHub[0x21d7c00]::start Aborting startup: error 0xe0004056
Jan 14 19:46:58 localhost kernel: USBF:

or
AppleUSBHubPort: Error 0xe00002eb: setting port power
Jan 14 14:36:53 localhost kernel: USBF:

or
AppleUSBOHCI[0x1df0000]::MakeDevice error setting address. err=0xe00002ed device=0x1eb3a00 - releasing device

Is there any way to know whether the error is a result of the hardware failing or the cause?  Determining this will help save a great deal of time (and possibly money).

Feedback much appreciated.  Thank you.

Adam
