USB shim status in Network pane

Our USB driver works with an Ethernet to USB shim. The shim uses IOEthernetController for a base class.
Although the driver and shim are functioning correctly, the Network pane in System Preferences always says,
"The cable for Ethernet Adaptor (en3) is not plugged in", and the Network Status always shows a "red light".

How can I make the Network panel show a green light and say that the cable is connected?
Is it possible to set my own default name, instead of "Ethernet Adaptor (en3)", in the Network panel?

thanks
