Re: How to prove USB hardware problem for maintenance?

The problem now is that it seems to be a problem with power regulation(or something else) which will not cause a total failure but will rather slow things down on the USB bus. For example if we connect a USB flash memory and copy a large file, it will slow down once the AC is unplugged because data is lost and packets retried.

However, how can he get this serviced? it's not something that he can show at the Apple store. Any suggestions? It is my understanding that he has to show what the problem is for it to get sent to Apple for service, am I incorrect?

I've had good luck just documenting the issue well and including a printed copy of it in the box with the machine when the PowerBook is sent in. If you can demo the problem with a simple CF reader, the repair people at Apple should be able to as well.
