I am working in conjunction with a small company who is developing a USB data acquisition board fro the Macintosh.

Is there any way of obtaining a Vendor / Product ID without paying $2000 per year?

There have been several discussions about this on the USB-if's discussion board at <http://developers.usb.org>. There has been, and may still be, a scheme where you can buy a vendor ID without becoming a USB-if member (which is what costs the $2k). That's a one time $1k fee or so. I think you could also become a member, get your VID, and you keep it if your membership lapses.

PIDs are administered by whoever own's the VID.

You may be able to get a PID for someone else's VID to use. If you're using someone else's silicon to construct your device, they may be willing to give you a PID to use.
