You need to make sure that you add the returned run loop event source to that run loop:

CFRunLoopSourceRef runLoopSourceRef;

kr = (*(IOHIDDeviceInterface**)upsDataRef->hidDeviceInteface)->createAsyncEventSource(

upsDataRef->hidDeviceInterface, &runLoopSourceRef);

CFRunLoopAddSource( CFRunLoopGetCurrent(),

IONotificationPortGetRunLoopSource(gNotifyPort),

kCFRunLoopDefaultMode);
