I have searched the archives and read Apple's QA1370, but haven't found any software that will allow me to capture a packet trace of the data in the USB packets going into and out of my computer.

You may have heard of USB software sniffers running on Windows. I checked two of them, and what they actually do is install a filter driver between the USB controller and the device driver.

This means that these sniffers can show the data being read and written, but they can't show the bus state. If there aren't any problems with the device going off into the weeds, such a software sniffer could help verify that the correct data is being sent or received. But if you have a non-responsive device that is sending STALL or is NAKing forever, for instance, you'll only be able to diagnose that with a hardware bus analyzer.
