Thread-topic: Self-identification of a vendor-specific flash drive
We are
developing a device similar to a flash drive. One of the key
differences is that for reasons of our own we set the SCSI interface RMB
bit to 0 (thus not identifying as removable media.) For this reason the
device is not recognized by OS X as a flash drive and is not automatically
exposed to the user on the desktop. (We know this is the reason since if
we change the RMB bit to 1 then everything works as expected. But we can't
do that in the final product.)
There is no
companion application for Mac OS X, the goal is for the device to mount for
direct user access on the desktop like a flash drive normally does without
requiring an installation CD.
I am trying to
figure out how to accomplish this. Page 37 of the "Mass Storage Device Driver
Programming Guide" discusses the creation of a vendor-specific driver.
This would require an installation CD to deliver that driver. That
seems like one option but I'm wondering if there is an easier/better
way.
Is it possible to
deliver on this device the information necessary for OS X to recognize it
as a USB mass storage device? This could be done on XP via an .inf
file on the device, but I am not familiar with OS X and not sure whether it
has similar functionality.
Thanks.
