USB Prober Not Responding in X 10.3.9

Bonjour !

I don't know how to qualify my problem in the context of this forum. Anyway, this is it :
Having problems getting a scanner working with my OS X 10.3.8 system ( CanoScan 8400 F ) , I went to know that installing the "version of the IOUSBFamily that shipped with 10.3.8 (7U16) but with logging enabled." would make it, and it did make it.
Recently, as you know, we were invited to update to OS X 10.3.9 - which I did, without taking in account that I should also consequently update the IOUSBFamily as above.
The result could have been worse, but now that I need to use my scanner again, I am fully conscious of what I missed.
I have saved the OS X 10.3.8 and can restart from it to use my scanner.
But presently, USB Prober is "not responding" in X 10.3.9, and "Force Quit" doesn't make it, and it doesn't show up in "Activity Monitor", and Terminal's "ps -aux" doesn't show any process id to kill :
fderive 503 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?? E 9:57AM 0:00.00 (USB Prober)

How to kill this kind of beast ( better than force restart ) ?.
How to take away properly ( uninstall ) this Mac OS X USB Debug Kit from my X 10.3.9 system ?
Last, the Mac OS X USB Debug Kit at ftp://ftp.apple.com/developer/Development_Kits/Mac_OS_USB/ doesn't show at the moment an update associated with X 10.3.9 : anybody knows how/when this is usually to happen ?

Merci beaucoup.

Francis.
