Using USB to connect two computers is a quite common stupidity on Windows. You need a special device that is actually two USB devices talking to each other and each of them talking to one of the computers. But there is no reason why you would do this with a Mac, you always have Ethernet available if the Mac has USB and you almost always have FireWire.
