Re: Hotplugging AES2501 fingerprint sensor

This sounds really bad. Has this device ever worked when hot- plugged in?

On a Windows XP machine, yes. I don't think that it's hardware related (2x2.7 GHz PowerMac) but I'll check with my PowerBook.

Did it change behavior with a specific OS release (10.4.4?)

I don't know. I just bought it two weeks ago knowing that there is now Mac software and made it work
using a USB sniffer on Windows. But with this hot-plugging problem...?

If so be sure to report this problem using http:// bugreporter.apple.com

From your description and the logs, it seems like the device might be disconnecting when it senses a USB Bus Reset condition. Someone will need to look at this device on a USB Bus Analyzer to tell for sure.

I can check out what the debug libs tell me as soon as they become available for 10.4.4.
Unfortunately I've no USB Bus Analyzer.

The USB Prober crashes the whole system when I press the button to start logging...
(even without the fp sensor connected)

Thanks and Regards,

Hi All,

I use an AuthenTec AES2501 fingerprint sensor successfully from a small application.

But when unplugging the device and plugging it back again,
it's not recognized anymore by Mac OS X (10.4.4).
Starting the computer again, it's all fine.

The system log shows the following:

kernel[0]: USBF: 17536.142 [0x36cbc00] The IOUSBFamily is having trouble enumerating a USB device that has been plugged in. It will keep retrying. (Port 2 of hub @ location: 0xb000000)

Do I have to write a device driver or can't I prevent the IOUSBFamily from failing to
access the sensor? Or wait for an OS update?
