reasonable challenge or totally farbot?

I received my Optimus Mini Three keyboard yesterday (with 3 small OLED screens). Unfortunately, they do not yet have software for Mac OS X.

I have a lot of time on my hands right now. I've done a lot of software development in the past, but never any device stuff. With a good example, some time, and a desire to learn something new, I figure I could make something serviceable until the real thing is released.

Does this plan sound reasonable, or is the project so large that I should just be patient while the Art. Lebedev Studio makes the software? Note: I'm not thinking of creating anything for release to others. I just want to respond to the key presses and make colored pixels appear on key screens.
