I don't know about active extension cables but you might want to look at these:

Note that I simply did a search on USB CAT-5 and this was the first item it came up with. I'm not specifically recommending these products nor the vendor. You should probably do the same search and look at other like products. But this type of thing should do what you want.

The other option are devices that connect you to USB devices through Ethernet.
