To all of you who have been so helpful: Thanks very much! That was more
responses and more info than I expected ;-)

I have ordered some of the suggested FTDI cables to try them out.

I've also had the chance to try out the Prolific-based ones, and they're not
working well. They seem to have bugs related to communicating with multiple
devices at once. (Very brief testing indicated they might work well if
there's only one.)
