What you are looking for goes by the moniker "digital rights
management" or DRM for short. This is Microsoft's "next big thing" and
is being slowly worked into a number of places. For what you are
looking for, I think that there is an eBook format that might do the
trick, but I also think it is Windows only. Right now I don't know of a
robust cross-platform method of doing this for any type of media,
especially not for something like a PDF. The best I can thnk of is a
password protected PDF.
